NBA analyst thinks LeBron James isn’t a good fit in Cleveland

The Cavaliers continue to be linked to four-time NBA champion LeBron James, who is weighing his free-agent options, but not everyone is convinced that returning home will actually improve his championship chances.

NBA analyst Kevin O’Connor believes that the idea of James rejoining the Cavaliers sounds better on paper than on the court, arguing that the current roster is not built to maximize his strengths.

“I don’t understand the appeal of Cleveland to LeBron, other than the fact that it’s hometown,” O’Connor wrote on

The Cavaliers have established themselves as one of the Eastern Conference’s top regular-season teams in recent years, but repeated disappointing performances in the postseason have fueled speculation that another blockbuster move is on the way.

Adding James is certainly one of the biggest moves imaginable, though O’Connor isn’t convinced it will solve Cleveland’s biggest problem.

“If he was going to go home to Cleveland, of course, it would be a great story for the final chapter,” O’Connor added. “But Cleveland’s roster needs a lot of work to be effective basketball-wise.”

One of the biggest concerns is how James will play alongside Donovan Mitchell and James Harden, all three players who thrive when the offense runs through them.

O’Connor believes this combination raises many of the same issues James faced in his final season with the Lakers, with Luka Doncic and Austin Reeves also needing the ball in their hands.

Cleveland does have one advantage that Los Angeles sometimes lacks. Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley remain one of the league’s top defensive frontcourts, and some league insiders believe that if James signs, Cleveland could consider trading one of the big men to create a more balanced roster.
