LeBron James’ move to the Philadelphia 76ers wasn’t just to join another contender team. Behind the scenes, one of the biggest questions surrounding the decision centered on Joel Embiid and his health, and the reigning MVP’s reaction seemed to play a big role.
While Philadelphia’s star lineup of Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and Jaylen Brown has always been attractive, concerns about Embiid’s durability remain a legitimate roadblock along the way.
According to NBA insider Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson of ScoopB.com, those concerns were addressed directly during a private meeting between James and Embiid in Los Angeles.
Robinson reported that Embiid gave James personal assurances about his health after completing his first surgery-free offseason, a conversation that dramatically changed James’ perspective on Philadelphia’s championship prospects.
With a healthy Embiid leading the frontcourt, the Sixers’ roster suddenly looks more stable heading into the 2026-27 season.
A league source also explained why Philadelphia’s roster construction became so attractive once Embiid’s availability was no longer considered the biggest concern.
“Joel has had some brief conversations, but the reality is, when you look at this team, if Joel is healthy, he’s your best player, right? But if he’s your fourth-best player, either way, you’re locked in because you have a very, very, very good team,” the source told Robinson.
In addition to Embiid, Philadelphia’s supporting cast also bolsters James’ confidence in the move.
Tyrese Maxey’s relationship with James developed through offseason workouts is considered another major positive, while the arrival of Jaylen Brown gives the Sixers another proven wing talent among the NBA’s best. Veteran coach Nick Nurse and executive consultant Bob Myers also helped reinforce the belief that Philadelphia has built a legitimate championship environment.
Instead of pursuing the biggest contract, James prioritized basketball health.
With Embiid’s assurances that he will be fully healthy entering the season and already with a roster capable of competing at the highest level, Philadelphia finally gives James what he believes is the clearest path to another NBA championship in Year 24.
