The United States allegedly throws her newborn baby out of a third-floor hotel window in Paris

An 18-year-old American student was detained in Paris for allegedly throwing her newborn baby on a third-floor window in a hotel.

Police were called at the scene of the 20th arrondissement in eastern Paris early Monday morning, prosecutors said. The newborn was taken to the hospital but was not injured.

The police juvenile protection department is tasked with investigating children's homicides.

Paris Match Magazine reported that neighbors were awakened by screams at 6 a.m. local time and were called emergency services.

Prosecutors confirmed that the 18-year-old student was taken to a hospital where she was undergoing a birth-related surgery. She was detained there by police.

Prosecutors say they are studying whether she has ever denied her pregnancy.

Sources said the young woman was part of a young man traveling in Europe.
