Rain falls in Los Angeles on Sunday morning
A weak storm caused rain in parts of the Los Angeles area on Sunday morning with potential for strong winds and thunderstorms later in the day.
After a period of warm temperatures, cool weather and rain returned to the area this week. As of Sunday morning, light rain fell along the coast and in the valleys on the coast, said Joe Sirard, a meteorologist with the National Meteorological Service.
The wet, cold weather is coming, just like the 97th Academy Awards held at the Dolby Theatre on Sunday afternoon. The show begins at 4 p.m.
Sirard said the overall total rainfall in the current weather system is expected to be the smallest, but later Sunday there is a possibility of thunderstorms entering valleys, mountains and deserts near downtown Los Angeles. There is also a strong wind consultation, with a maximum speed of up to 40 mph along the coast and up to 55 mph in the Antelope Valley.
There may be snow on the hills on Sunday, including snow along I-5 along the north of Castaic.
“There may be some travel difficulties,” Sirard said.
Later this week, the National Weather Service predicted moderate precipitation on Monday, with a second storm coming Wednesday and Thursday. The risk of debris flow is very low, with snowfall levels ranging from 3,500 to 5,000 feet, the service said.
As California experienced a noticeably warm winter, a new storm came.
As of Friday, the state's snow was 85% of the average at this time of year. Inadequate rainfall in January helped fuel the deadly wildfires in Los Angeles County, a time when the fire season ended.
