LeBron James’ free agency remains one of the biggest stories in the NBA, but there’s no timetable for a decision yet, according to his longtime agent Rich Paul.
“We’re not going to rush,” Paul said on the latest episode of the Game Over podcast hosted by Max Kellerman. “We’re not going to rush it. It’s his choice and when he makes the choice, he makes the choice.”
Tuesday comes three weeks after Paul informed the Los Angeles Lakers that James would not return for the 2026-27 season, opening the door for his record-tying 24th NBA campaign. The Golden State Warriors, Cleveland Cavaliers, Philadelphia 76ers and Miami Heat are all believed to remain on the roster, according to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin.
Paul also revealed that multiple teams are continuing to check to see if they can do more to increase their chances of signing James.
“A few people called and said, ‘Hey, Rich, is there anything else we should do? Is there anything we can do?'” Paul said. “My answer is, ‘No. We don’t need you to go above and beyond on anything. We understand that. That’s clear. All the information has been sent.'”
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver recently admitted that he wants James to announce his decision in order to finalize next season’s schedule. Paul said the two discussed the comments privately but reiterated that the timeline belongs solely to James.
“I met Adam in New York and we talked about it,” Paul said. “Like I said, it’s still his choice. So if he really doesn’t know, you can’t rush it. You can’t rush it.”
As speculation continues, Paul insists no one knows when James will make his decision.
“These people don’t know anything,” Paul said. “I don’t know when he will make his choice, but it could be 48 seconds [from now]. Maybe 48 minutes. I have no idea. Again, you can’t make someone know something they don’t know. “
