Washington Capitals sign guard Jacob McDonald Sign a one-year two-way contract.
McDonald won the Eddie Shore Award as the league’s outstanding blueliner in the 2024-25 season, when he set the AHL single-season scoring record for a defenseman with 31 goals. After missing the first four months of the 2025-26 season due to injury, McDonald played in 17 regular season games with the Colorado Eagles, scoring four goals and eight assists. He contributed goals and assists in 17 playoff games, helping the Hawks reach the Western Conference Finals.
In 357 career AHL games with Colorado, San Jose, Springfield Thunderbirds, Albany/Binghamton and Springfield Falcons, McDonald totaled 103 goals (seventh-most among defensemen in AHL history) and 157 assists for 260 points. In addition to participating in the 2018 and 2025 AHL All-Star Classic games, McDonald was a three-time playoff All-Star, including a first-team selection in 2017-18 and 2024-25, and a second-team selection in 2019-20.
McDonald, an undrafted draft pick out of Cornell, also played in 135 games with Florida State, Colorado State and San Jose in the National Hockey League, scoring 10 goals and 17 assists.
