After the Sixers were defeated by the Knicks in Game 4, Joel Embiid’s postgame comments left Philadelphia fans a little uneasy.
Philadelphia failed to win a game in the division semifinals.
But Embiid surprised everyone by hailing its success.
“I know we lost, I know it wasn’t the right mentality, but to me, it was a success,” Embiid said, via ESPN. “I don’t know where I’m going to be this year or how long I’m going to play. If I’m going to play based on what my knee has been the past two years, I’m hoping for the best.
“I feel like we’ve taken care of the knee issue and it’s not an issue.”
He then surprised everyone even more by expressing uncertainty about whether he would stay with the Sixers beyond this season.
“VJ is going to get better, I know, you know, I’m going to talk to him, he’s going to get better, he was great in his first year,” Tyrese is going to get better, he’s taking a step forward every year. PG, we’ve seen over the past few weeks, you know, he still gets it and then others. I don’t know who will be here. I don’t even know if I’m going to be here, you know, no matter what happens, but, you know, for me, I’m excited to, you know, really get back to myself. “
It is worth noting that he has worked with Ben Simmons, J.J. Redick, James Harden, Tobias Harris, Al Horford, Tyrese Maxey, Jimmy Butler, Paul George and many other stars, but he has never made it past the Western Conference Finals – he is the only MVP in history to reach the conference finals.
Maybe Embiid is just seeing an ominous sign, because the 76ers management does have a lot of thinking to do.
A chunk of their cash is tied up in Paul George and Embiid’s contracts, so they can’t do much to improve their roster — unless that changes.
