The company said Thursday that the Santa Monica grocery store was closed after cockroaches were found in the facility.
The story of high-end groceries was ordered to be closed after the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health discovered that the public report described as “pest infestation.”
“We deeply regret that a cockroach was found in our tonic bar,” an Erewhon spokesman said in a statement from the Times. “We sincerely apologize for our mistakes in standards.”
A shop worker who spoke with the Times on Thursday said two cockroaches were found.
A business spokesman said the store “voluntarily” closed the tonic bar, where they made coffee, tea, juice and smoothies and oversee a thorough sanitation process. The company said it expects to reopen the supplement bars later on Thursday.
The popularity of luxury grocery chains has soared in recent years. It has trained a group of shoppers who regularly go to buy prepared meals or expensive celebrity-supported smoothies.
Three locations will be opened in Southern California this year.
According to records published online, the public health department found that the store encountered a “significant” problem with “rodents, insects, birds or animals” in its closure order, according to records published online.
