American Airlines flights from New York to New Delhi to Rome after safety concerns

The airline said a flight from New York City to New Delhi, India, turned around on the Caspian Sea on Sunday and landed in Rome after safety concerns, which later proved “impossible.”
A spokesman for Leonardo da Vinci International (FCO) airport told CBS News that 199 passengers and 15 crew members were aware of the problem while on the plane, when it was at the Cassia Sea. They said it landed at the FCO airport because it could cope with such events, but they did not elaborate on changes in the flight plan.
A spokesman for an American airline told CBS News 292 that was transferred due to safety concerns, but it was not exhaustive.
“The flight landed safely at the FCO and law enforcement inspected and cleaned the plane and removed it,” a spokesperson said.

After landing, a fire truck can be seen on the landing belt on one side of the plane. No injuries. A spokesman told the Associated Press that the airport continues to operate normally.
A spokesperson for American Airlines told CBS News: “Safety and security are our top priority and we apologize to our customers for inconvenience.”
Neeraj Chopra, one of the passengers in the flight, told the Associated Press that the captain warned the plane that they would need to turn around for about three hours and then they should land on Dehli due to “changes in safety conditions.”
Chopra said he began to emphasize when the captain later announced that the fighter would escort their plane to Rome
“I feel a little panic, okay, what's going on?” Chopra told the Associated Press. “Things have to happen here.”
Flights from John Kennedy International Airport are heading Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) in the capital of India. The flight will be overnight in Rome to allow the rest of the crew to take, and then continue to travel to India as soon as possible on Monday.
