Man with Palestinian flag arrested after climbing Big Ben

Elsewhere in London, a man was arrested earlier on Sunday as he climbed the Big Monster Tower at Westminster Palace in central London while barefoot and holding the Palestinian flag.

The man appeared to be protesting on a ledge a few yards above the Elizabeth Tower, which housed Big Ben, stepped onto the building after midnight and walked on the cherry pickers after a long conversation with negotiators. He encountered an ambulance waiting for him.

Traffic around London's Palace of Westminster was in a standstill for most of Saturday as emergency personnel tried to reach the man. Negotiators were lifted several times on the fire brigade ladder platform and then eventually talked to them.

Westminster Bridge and a nearby street were closed for most of the day, with several emergency service vehicles on site as the crowd looked at the crowd. Police also blocked all pedestrians from entering the parliament square. A small group of supporters shouted “Free Palestine” behind nearby police officers.

Officials said the visit to the Parliament building was cancelled due to the incident.

“This is a protracted incident due to the details of the person's location and needs to ensure the safety of our officials, individuals and the wider public,” the Metropolitan Police said in a statement.
