LeBron James’ future continues to dominate NBA discussions as questions mount about where and how long the Lakers superstar plans to continue playing.
Several teams are expected to monitor LeBron’s situation this offseason if he decides not to stay with the Lakers, according to NBA insider Marc Stein of The Stein Line.
However, financial constraints surrounding the league could make any potential move more complicated than expected.
Stein reports that the Golden State Warriors, Cleveland Cavaliers, New York Knicks and Los Angeles Clippers are all teams to watch.
“League sources say the Golden State Warriors have long been interested in bringing James to Northern California, but would be severely limited in what they could offer,” Stein wrote. “James’ hometown Cleveland Cavaliers have even less financial flexibility than the Warriors and are far removed from all the Hollywood connections LeBron and his family made during his time with the Lakers, but no one wants to completely rule that out because of the storybook ending factor.
Stein added, “James’ love for Madison Square Garden has been known for years, but the Knicks could certainly choose to stay on their current path. The only team that could credibly be added to the shortlist is the Clippers, who hired James’ former Cavaliers coach (Tyronn Lue) and play in Los Angeles.”
Still, Stein acknowledges that the market as a whole may not be particularly deep.
“There simply aren’t many places that could entice James to spend his farewell season,” Stein wrote.
This naturally led to speculation that returning to the Los Angeles Lakers or retiring could become the two most realistic outcomes.
Even at 41 years old, LeBron is still one of the most productive stars in the league. Although his scoring role has declined this season along with Luka Doncic and Austin Reeves, he is still averaging 20.9 points, 7.2 assists, and 6.1 rebounds per game while shooting 51.5% from the field.
