Dwight Howard retires after nearly two years in basketball career

Dwight Howard officially announced the end of his basketball journey. The former Los Angeles Lakers center revealed on social media Thursday morning that he will retire from professional basketball, capping a nearly two-decade career that included being one of the most dominant big men in modern NBA history.

Howard's decision to announce the news on the 12th of this month was carefully considered. He has worn the number 12 jersey throughout his career and he explained that the number will continue to be a part of his life going forward.

Howard said that as part of his post-retirement plans, he plans to travel around the world and do good deeds 12 days a month.

Howard entered the NBA as one of the most anticipated rookies of this generation. The Orlando Magic selected him with the first overall pick in the 2004 NBA draft out of high school, and he quickly became one of the most physical players in the league.

During his prime in Orlando, Howard dominated the paint with his strength, athleticism and defensive presence. His resume in that era was outstanding, with three consecutive Defensive Player of the Year awards, five consecutive All-NBA selections and eight consecutive All-Star selections.

While Howard's prime years were spent with the Magic, he ultimately achieved his ultimate career goal with the Los Angeles Lakers.

After an unsuccessful season with the team in 2012, Howard returned a few years later and played a major role in the Lakers' 2020 championship run. As a key defensive player and anchor in the paint, he helped the team win a championship in the NBA's Orlando bubble.

Howard last appeared in the NBA in the 2021-22 season, playing for the Lakers. He has since continued to compete internationally and compete in various exhibition matches.

His contributions to the sport will be officially recognized when he is inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2025.

While Howard's personality has polarized fans at times, his impact on the game is undeniable. In his prime, he was widely regarded as the premier center of his generation.
