Hornets resolve Terry Rozier dispute with Miami

The long-term implications of the Terry Rozier trade between the Charlotte Hornets and Miami Heat have officially been resolved.

According to USA TODAY Sports, Charlotte will send a second-round pick in the 2026 NBA Draft to Miami to end the controversy surrounding the January 2024 trade that originally sent Rozier to the Heat.

Two people with direct knowledge of the situation confirmed the resolution, although they spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not allowed to discuss the matter publicly.

The pick Charlotte sends will be the most advantageous of its available second-round picks, which originally belonged to the Golden State Warriors or Denver Nuggets.

The decision was communicated throughout the league via an official memo distributed to all NBA general managers.

At the heart of the dispute is information related to irregular betting activity related to Rozier's performance in a game on March 23, 2023, when he was a member of the Hornets. Neither the NBA nor Charlotte informed Miami of the activity until the trade was finalized.

The Integrity Monitoring Service first raised concerns about questionable betting related to the game in March 2023, but the situation was not widely known until January 2025, after both the betting issues and the federal investigation into Rozier became public.

League rules outline strict procedures for how a deal should be completed. According to the NBA Constitution and Bylaws, all teams involved in a trade must first send the agreed-upon terms to the league office before participating in a so-called trade call with league officials and lawyers.

During this process, the team needs to confirm all details of the transaction and disclose relevant information.

A provision in the league's bylaws prohibits teams from “making any other material misrepresentation or failing to disclose any other material information during a trade call.”

Once all terms are confirmed, each franchisee must demonstrate that no conditions exist other than those discussed.
