Russell Westbrook signs one-year contract with Sacramento Kings

Russell Westbrook is headed to Sacramento. The nine-time All-Star and 2017 NBA MVP has reportedly agreed to a one-year, $3.6 million contract with the Kings, according to ESPN's Shams Charania.

Westbrook and the Kings remained in contact throughout the offseason before finalizing an agreement ahead of the 2025-26 season. The 36-year-old guard has nearly two decades of experience and is added to add depth, energy and leadership to the backcourt.

Charania said: “Westbrook and the Kings have been in communication throughout the offseason, and the 2017 NBA MVP has been patient in free agency and now has reached an agreement for his 18th season.”

Westbrook played 75 games for the Denver Nuggets last season, averaging 27.9 minutes per game, 13.3 points, 6.1 assists and 4.9 rebounds. He also shot a career-high 52 percent from two-point range and finished in the top 10 in Sixth Man of the Year voting for the third consecutive season.

Sources told Charania that Westbrook's relationships with Domantas Sabonis, DeMar DeRozan and Zach LaVine played a major role in his move to Sacramento. The trio reportedly “pushed the Kings to sign Russell Westbrook.”

The veteran is expected to come off the bench behind newly added point guard Dennis Schroder, providing playmaking and strength to a second unit that ranked 28th in points off the bench and 29th in assists last season.

Now on his seventh NBA team, Westbrook continues to climb the all-time rankings, trailing only shooting guard Oscar Robertson by 506 points and 75 career assists shy of 10,000.
