The news comes after Barack met with the Syrian president and foreign minister during his visit to Türkiye on Saturday. Relations between the two countries have steadily improved since former President Bashar al-Assad was ousted in December.

Barak said he stressed that the sanctions on Syria would uphold “the integrity of our main goal”, the lasting failure of the “Group of Islamic State, also known as IS or ISIS.” He added that this will give Syrians a better future.
“I also commend President Al-Sharaa for taking meaningful steps to enact President Trump's views on foreign terrorist fighters, anti-joint measures, relations with Israel and camps and detention centers in northeastern Syria,” Barak said. He refers to the detention center, where thousands of ISIS members and two camps remain in areas currently controlled by the Syrian Democratic Forces, supported by the U.S. and led by Kurds.
The Congressional Sanctions, known as the Caesar Syrian Civilian Protection Act, aims to isolate previous rulers of Syria by effectively expelling operators who engage in the global financial system. They specifically blocked post-war reconstruction, so investors may be wary of reconstruction projects when sanctions can be restored six months later, despite the executive order exemption from 180 days.
