Democrats advised Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene to engage in insider trading at a House hearing Wednesday, leaving the proceedings for about 20 minutes.
The Governor’s Subcommittee, chaired by Georgia Republicans, is holding hearings on transgender athletes participating in fencing and other sports.
When the Democrats criticized Green in the panel, two of them – Texas Rep. Greg Casar and Jasmine Crockett – proposed the recent stock deals made by congresswomen.
“We're here because Chairman Marjorie Taylor Greene believes she can avoid discussions about insider trading allegations if she chooses a vulnerable group like trans people,” Casar said.
Between April 2 and 9, Green bought tens of thousands of dollars in stock in a series of companies, when President Donald Trump's tariff announcement and subsequent pauses caused a big change in the stock market. Congresswoman insisted that the deal was conducted by an independent financial adviser.
“This is what my portfolio manager did for me and he did a great job,” the congresswoman said. Tell Georgia Recorder last month. “Guess what he did? He bought the dipping sauce.”
Democrats argue that Green and other Republicans near Trump may raise tariffs on the president in advance, allowing them to profit from non-public information.
When Crockett brought up Greene's deal, she showed a poster that included the face of a congresswoman.
“Let's look at the fraud,” Crockett said. “We can investigate whether members of the White House and the subcommittee are engaged in insider trading and market manipulation. Maybe it's a coincidence that the chairman brought hundreds of thousands of dollars in stock the day before Trump announced a 90-day suspension of tariffs, but I don't think we'll ever know.”
Subsequently, Rep. Nancy Mace, a Republican in South Carolina, asked Crockett to fall, saying Texas lawmakers were “accusing criminal acts.” This led to the Commission suspending its operational review of Crockett's speech.
Finally, Green called the meeting and ordered it.
Georgia Republicans demanded that Metz withdraw the motion, saying that the Texas Democratic remarks are “boundary” and it is important to continue “to make sure we stay on track, not to be bothered by the uninterrupted false allegations of Democrats.”
