The Memphis area began to see a “generational flood” tonight with a “rare, high impact” incident. What to know

Storms in the south-central region are advancing this week, with some areas expected to bring more than 10 inches of rain. Flood surveillance will take effect on Sunday in response to the threat of “generation flooding”.

“This is a rare, high impact event,” the National Weather Service wrote on X.

Memphis and South Central will experience the highest inclement weather categories between 3 p.m. and midnight. The National Weather Service expects the worst weather to hit Memphis between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m.

The storm during this time will be long-term, extensive and intense. Tornadoes, strong winds and hail are also likely.

Memphis is expected to see 8 to 10 inches of rain on Wednesday afternoon and Sunday morning.

“The total rainfall over five days is within the 10 to 15 inches range of I-40 and north,” the National Weather Service wrote. “When today's high risk of bad air, the risk of taking effect on Thursday, Friday and Saturday is small.”

Memphis will be under wind consultation and flood surveillance for most of Wednesday.

Wind consultation will continue from Wednesday to midnight from 7 a.m. Flood observation starts at 1 p.m. Wednesday and lasts until 7 a.m. Sunday.

Showers and thunderstorms may take place between Wednesday and Thursday from 5 a.m., with wind gusts as high as 45 mph. The highest point on Wednesday is expected to be 85 degrees before a steep drop to 65 degrees.
