Newark police officer killed, injured in shooting

A police union said in a statement that an officer was injured in a shooting in Newark on Friday night.
The Essex County Attorney's Office said the shooting occurred around 6:30 p.m. near the intersection of Broadway and Cartret Street, where an elementary school and Lutheran church face each other on a busy commercial street.
The prosecutor's office said two police officers had been taken to university hospitals. Neither officer was publicly confirmed. Authorities have not provided information about who shot them or the shooting.
Two officers were shot and killed Friday, and one of them “made the ultimate sacrifice,” the New Jersey Fraternity Police Order Coalition said in a social media article.
“Our law enforcement officers protect our community every day by hurting themselves, and tonight is a painful reminder of the depth of the sacrifices they have made.” New Jersey Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin said in a statement.
Gov. Phil Murphy asked people to “pray for these officials, their families and all of us in uniformed men and women who devote their lives to keep us safe.”
This is a developing story that will be updated.
