Minneapolis musician Soki's mother in Ellie Goulding

When Annie Tammearu (also known as Sorkey’s mother) wrote the song “Rivet Gun” in her modest apartment in Minneapolis, she never expected Grammy Award-winning pop singer Ellie Goulding to notice.

“It's crazy because my sister and I used to watch her music videos all the time,” Soki's mother said. “I'm honored that she loved it so much and decided to post the video to it. It means she understands my vision too, which is great.”

The 21-year-old posted the song on social media less than a month ago, where she developed a modest fan base as an autographless artist, but the “Rivet Gun” is different.

“This is my first time writing a song, like all the lyrics are like vomiting, like crazy,” she said.

Soki's mother brought it to her friends and collaborators.

She said: “I brought it to the studio, Jack Pfeffer, Elijah Herchert and Mo Todd.

She is proud of what they have achieved and she eliminates it before she finishes it.

“'Let me post a demo of the rivet gun only.' Bad idea, but also a good idea,” she said.

It shared over 100,000 times on Tiktok in its first 30 hours and grew up from there.

Now that it has 1.5 million streams on Spotify, Soki Mother has just signed a deal with Mom+Pop, a roster of independent record labels that includes Alicia Keys and Tom Morello, co-founder of Rage’s versus machines and Audioslave.

“Training people is the best thing for me and my art because sometimes you have to ask for help, like I can’t do everything by myself,” she said.

Good lessons for music and life.

“It still feels like mine, it's great, but it's ours, too,” she said.

Soki's mother is making music videos of singles and other songs for the album.
