Porto's bakery advances in downtown Disney, replacing the Earl of Sandwich
The long-awaited Porto bakery and café are one step closer to providing pastries, cakes and famous potato balls for tourists to “the happiest place on earth.”
Disney applied for a demolition permit this month, and the building previously housed La Brea Bakery in downtown Disney, just steps from the entrance to Disney California Adventure and Disneyland. Currently located in Earl of Sandwich, the site will be the seventh Porto bakery location in Southern California.
The location attracts a lot of abortions. In 2023, at least 27 million visitors will be broadcast in downtown Disney shopping districts, entering Disneyland and Disney California adventures, according to an annual report from consulting firm AECOM and Theme Entertainment Association.
The Porto bakery started in 1976 in a small space at the Silver Lake Strip Shopping Center and has been a beloved in Los Angeles as an extension of founder Rosa Porto's business in Cuba. Lines on six locations in the bakery often meander over the weekends, and yellow boxes stuffed with pastries often appear on flights in Los Angeles.
Hundreds of fans flocked to the Cuban bakery when it opened its first Orange County location in 2017.
The permit submitted a permit to the Anaheim Department of Planning and Construction, requiring the removal of 2,610 square feet of bakery and restaurants, and the removal of two theme park ticket booths. According to city records, utilities will be capped and the base is removed on each site.
It is not clear when and when the door will be opened at the bakery location in Porto, Anaheim. Disney officials and Porto representatives did not immediately return emails seeking comments.
A spot announced in downtown Disney in 2022 has sparked a lot of excitement. La Brea Bakery closed the following year to make way for beloved Los Angeles agency, but construction did not begin immediately.
The delay prompted rumors that Porto abandoned the site’s plans, but the bakery last year relaxed people’s ideas and announced it would arrive at an outdoor shopping mall in 2025.
