Spain protests housing shortages throughout Spain
On Saturday, thousands of people participated in demonstrations across Spain to protest the lack of affordable housing.
Several tenant organizations and trade unions have called for demonstrations in 40 cities, including Parma de Mallorca, Barcelona and Madrid, under the slogan: “Let's end to profit from the house.”
Organizers called for an end to property speculation, more social housing, converting housing into holiday accommodation, rent reductions and restrictions on expropriation.

Over the years, too few housing has been built in Spain due to sharp rise in rents.
The consequences of mass and luxury tourism have caused anger, especially in resort centres such as Mallorca, Barcelona, ​​Valencia, Malaga and Madrid.
Although the number of visitors continues to break records in Spain, low-income residents cannot afford the rent.
According to real estate company Fotocasa, rents in the Balearic Islands, including Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza, have increased by 158% over the past 10 years.
People participated in demonstrations in Madrid, demanding political measures to interfere with the housing market. After several massive demonstrations in different parts of Spain, the tenants’ unions, mortgage platforms and parliaments against evictions, as well as other groups, called for the first demonstrations across the state.
