Cuba suffered another widespread power outage, leaving millions in the dark as ministry works on restoration

Cuba suffered a massive power outage Friday night, affecting Havana and the country's provinces that have put millions into darkness.
Cuba's Ministry of Energy and Mines said that at around 8:15 p.m. local time, a power outage occurred at the Dizzomero substation in the suburb of Havana, “a large amount of power generation was generated in western Cuba and the failure of the national electrical system.”
The ministry said on its account on social platform X that it is “in the process of recovery.”
The streets of Havana are dark and empty, with only windows from hotels with generators. Internet services are affected.
The distant population is as far as Guantanamo, Artemisa, Santiago de Cuba and Santa Clara reported that the glittering people experienced power outages.

Earlier, the National Organization for Regulating the industry, said in a daily report that demand during peak hours would be around 3,250 MW and the deficit would reach about 1,380 MW, meaning 42% of the national energy system would be shut down. This number is not the highest in memory recently.

Within two years after Hurricane Ian became a Category 3 storm in 2022 and damaged power plants, the power outage in 2024 was considered the worst case in Cuba.
Cuba's frequent power outages are plaguing with more than half of the countries cutting power during peak hours. The disruption is mainly caused by fuel shortages and aging infrastructure. In many parts of the island, electricity is essential for cooking and pumping water.
Authorities on the island have begun plans to install photovoltaic parks and promised to prepare dozens this year. The power outages were previously prompted anti-government demonstrations in 2021, 2022 and 2024.
