German police said a union demonstration in central Munich on Thursday was a demonstration of at least 28 people, including children. Officials said it was believed to be an attack.
Participants participated in demonstrations related to strikes organized by key trade unions in the German public sector. According to Munich Police Chief Christian Huber, the suspect is believed to have been arrested as a 24-year-old asylum seeker in Afghanistan. She also described hearing one or two gunshots, which she believed were from police.
“This is simply terrible,” Bavarian Prime Minister Soder told reporters at the scene. “We feel with the victims that we are praying for the victims – we really hope they all do that.”
Munich mayor Dieter Reiter said he was “deeply shocked” by the incident. He said the child was injured.
The alleged attack also took place for hours, with leading international figures including U.S. Vice President JD Vance and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy participating in the city, which attended a high-profile Munich security conference held on Friday.
The Bavarian interior minister said he did not doubt the link between the meeting and the alleged attack.
“This is not something we can tolerate or accept,” German Chancellor Olaf Scholz told the media.
He urged the judiciary to “use all powers” to file charges against the suspect.
“Anyone who commits a crime in Germany will be severely punished and jailed, and it must also be understood that they may not be able to continue living in Germany,” he said.
Scholz said the suspect “must be punished and must leave the country.”
The Prime Minister noted that his government deported convicted criminals to Afghanistan in August 2024 and is working hard again – “not only once, but constantly.”
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte expressed “shock and sadness” at what he called the “attack.”
As the three-day Munich Security Conference is the annual gathering of international diplomatic and security policy officials, Bavarian capital will see heavy safety in the coming days.
The Munich incident happened after a two-year-old boy and a man were killed in a knife attack in Aschaffenburg, Bavaria. Afghanistan, who was filed for asylum, was the suspect in the attack that pushed immigration to the center of German election campaigns.
The Aschaffenburg attacks in Mannheim and Solingen last year were immigrants from Afghanistan and Syria, respectively, and in the latter case, also Denied asylum seekers who were supposed to leave the country.
