Cooper Flagg is coming back

The Dallas Mavericks roster could soon be getting a major upgrade. Rookie star Cooper Flagg is expected to return Thursday night when Dallas takes on the Orlando Magic, according to veteran NBA reporter Mark Stein.

“The expectation in Orlando now is that Mavericks rookie Cooper Flagg will indeed play tonight for the first time in nine games, league sources say,” Stein reported.

The 2025 No. 1 overall pick has missed eight games with a sprained midfoot in his left foot. His absence is noticeable for a Mavericks team that has struggled to maintain momentum without him.

Dallas has gone just two wins and six losses in Flagg's absence, underscoring the rookie's importance to the team's rotation.

Flagg's return appears to be cautiously approaching. He was upgraded to questionable before Dallas lost to the Charlotte Hornets on Tuesday and was eventually listed as questionable against Orlando.

The expectation is that he will manage his minutes carefully in his first game back.

“He's expected to get relief on Thursday night before playing increased minutes on Friday against the Boston Celtics,” Yahoo Sports wrote.

The Mavericks will likely be conservative with their franchise cornerstone, especially considering Flagg has endured multiple setbacks this season, including a sprained ankle and another illness earlier this year.

Despite missing time, the rookie still put up impressive numbers in his debut.

In 49 games, Flagg averaged 20.4 points, 6.6 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 1.2 steals while becoming one of the most impactful young players in the league.

His all-around contributions make him a core part of Dallas' long-term plans.

With 21 games left in the regular season, the Mavericks currently have a record of 21 wins and 40 losses. While a playoff berth is unlikely, Flagg's return gives the team a chance to get back into rhythm and continue to build around their young cornerstone.
