Penguins' Koivunen named AHL Player of the Month for February TheAHL.com

Springfield, Massachusetts. …American Hockey League announced today Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins forward koivuning town has been selected as Fortune Tyres 'Looking For More' AHL Player of the Month February.
Each month, the Fortune Tires “Expect More” AHL Player of the Month Award recognizes an outstanding player in the league who has excelled. As the official tire of the AHL, Fortune Tires will donate $500 to the player's charity of choice and $2,500 to the Player of the Year charity, highlighting the company's commitment to excellence and community impact.
Koivunen played in 11 games for the Penguins last month, scoring six goals and adding 10 assists for 16 points, including scoring in six straight games and his first two-goal game of the season.
Koivunen assisted on the game-winning goal in the third period of a 4-1 win over Hershey on February 4, and then had a career-high four points with a goal and three assists in a 6-5 victory over Lehigh Valley on February 6. On February 7, he provided two more assists in a 4–3 win over Hershey, including assisting on the winning goal in overtime, and had a goal and an assist in a 4–3 overtime loss to Cleveland. On February 15, Koivunen scored in six straight games to end the month, highlighted by two games at Springfield on February 18 and another game-winning goal against Bridgeport on February 21.
The 22-year-old Koivunen leads the Penguins with 21 assists and is second on the team with 32 points despite playing in only 27 AHL games this season, while contributing two goals and three assists in 27 NHL games with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Koivunen scored 56 points in 63 games for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and was named to the AHL All-Rookie Team in the 2024-25 season. He was originally Carolina's second-round selection in the 2021 NHL Draft and was acquired by the Penguins in a trade on March 7, 2024. Koivunen was born in Oulu, Finland and previously played for Liiga team Kärpät for three seasons. Oulu also won a silver medal with the Finnish team at the 2022 IIHF World Junior Championship.
