Trade noises fade as LeBron James prepares to stay in Los Angeles

LeBron James' name ignited Las Vegas during the NBA Summer League, but trade speculation surrounding him is cooling down quickly.

Despite the headlines and hot news, the actual movement has never existed, and according to ESPN's Zach Lowe, it's unlikely to change anytime soon.

“I heard this is the topic of the summer league, and it's now quiet,” Lowe said on the Bill Simmons podcast. “Either way, it doesn't seem like a clean solution. Everyone says we should expect them to be with the Lakers. That's what I expect.”

LeBron, who is still under a contract after receiving $52.6 million in player selection, holds no trade terms and is not expected to give up money in the acquisition. This reality makes it nearly impossible to find a viable deal.

Even the hypothetical package sounds shaky. Simmons floated at a Miami party, and Lao replied:

“Like on paper, a calorie deal that isn't crazy for any team. Andrew Wiggins and Norman Powell were some sort of option exchange for Lebron in January, maybe it was just that crazy, maybe that's what it sounds like. I think for Lakers Kel'el Ware, that's all.”

But, does Miami make sense for LeBron at this stage? Even in the fallen year of the Eastern Conference, the Heat may not be a title contender. Cleveland is a potentially feel-good return destination, and it is impossible to reach a legal agreement due to salary cap limits. Meanwhile, the Knicks need to be brave enough to get his depth, which beats the point where he gets it.

James is the most realistic path, staying in Los Angeles for the 2025-26 season and reevaluating it in free agents next summer. For now, the Lakers, led by Luka Doncic, Austin Reaves, Deandre Ayton and the adapted roster, are closer to the competition than most LeBron-related teams.
