Republican senators launch investigation into Los Angeles immigration advocates saying they are “funding” unrest

A Republican senator from Missouri threatened an investigation into one of Los Angeles’ most mature immigration groups on Wednesday, accusing them of “funding for the turmoil.”
Senator Josh Hawley said in a letter to the head of the organization, Angelica Salas, that the Humanized Immigration Rights Alliance should “stop and cease further participation in the organization, funding or promoting these illegal activities.”
“The credible report now shows that your organization provides logistical support and financial resources to individuals engaged in these disruptive actions,” Hawley wrote. “Let me clearly say: funding for civil strife is not protected remarks. This helps with criminal acts. Therefore, you must immediately stop and stop the organization, funding or promotion of further participation in these illegal activities. ”
Hawley did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Salas, a longtime immigration rights activist, pushed for asylum state laws and organized dozens of peaceful protests over the years, saying the allegations were false and point to the years the group did in Los Angeles.
“This is trying to draw focus from the pain and pain that this administration has caused,” she said. “I refuse to do this with anyone other than them.”
She said the federal government is working together to disenfranchise immigrants who have deprived them of their rights, partly because of undermining the groups that support them.
Hawley's letter follows news announced this week by the House panel, which will investigate 200 NGOs, including Chirla, to “serve or support unacceptable foreigners during the Biden-Harris administration's historic border crisis.”
In a statement, House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Mark Green (R-TN) and Supervisory, Investigation and Accountability Chairman Josh Brecheen (R-OK) wrote that they “are checking whether these NGOs use taxpayer money to promote illegal activities because the last administration promoted millions of dollars of illegal governments across our non-smart external products in exchange for our borderriens crossing our bordersbordersborsorser’s.
Federal officials arrested President Huerta, the International Alliance of Service Employees, on Friday for allegedly interfering with federal officials. Alliance is one of the teams that work with Chirla. Federal prosecutors from Bill Essayli in Los Angeles appeared to hinted on Sunday that other union officials and organizers would be investigated.
“We've seen union activists and organizers get involved in these efforts,” he told local TV station KCAL. “We have a lot of videos online and in both surveillance videos. We have the FBI team working 24/7. We'll find you. We'll find you, we'll come to you.”
Saras said they did not do anything illegal, but she took the threat seriously.
“It’s obvious that they have an agenda for social justice organizations and anyone in the infrastructure that supports community rights organizations,” she said. “That's why they follow not only the immigrant community, but also the organizations, trying to smear us by returning it to us, trying to connect with violent groups. It's not normal.”
