According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple's next Mac operating system is called Tahoe Lake Macos Tahoe.
The new MACO will be reportedly unveiled at a global developer conference on June 9, and since 2013, it will report stick with Apple's convention to name the operating system version after scenic California nature such as Big Sur and Sequoia.
Representatives for Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Version number will also change from Macos 16 to MacOS 26. Apple is changing the OS version on its platform to align with its release year, so we will have MacOS 26, iOS 26, TVOS 26, TVOS 26, and so on for launch in 2025, but with the biggest coverage in 2026.
According to Gurman, the new operating system will be a major overhaul of the Mac operating system, and the new name can hint at a visual refresh. “It is known that the dark blue lakes show reflections of the sky and surrounding mountains – which flicker in the compelling visuals of the new user interface,” he wrote.

Representatives of the real Lake Tahoe responded
Those who promote scenic areas are happy with the news of the name.
“If Apple’s goal is breathtaking and iconic, they chose the right name – Lake Tahoe is awesome for the design,” Ryn Muat, Communications and Community Outreach Manager at Visitlaketahoe.com told CNET. “We are proud to represent the south shore of Lake Tahoe and are recognized in this way – it’s a wonderful driving force for our year-round destination.”
Visitcalifornia.com president and CEO Caroline Beteta agreed, noting that Apple's early operating system also used the name of the amazing Golden State destination.
“From Yosemite and Mojave to Catalina, Big Sur, Sonoma and more – it's obvious that Apple continues to draw inspiration from its own country, choosing some of the most scenic places in California, year after year under the name of its operating system,” Beteta told CNET. “Crystal transparent, blue and surrounded by majestic peaks, Apple chose Lake Tahoe for its latest operating system, which gave California's alpine playground a glimpse of the world.”
