They pick up a season, a cliff no longer adapts to the ongoing comics of creator Yukinobu Tatsu.

Theatrical event includes insightful interview videos with directors, while IO9 further pierces the veil, chatting with Abel Gongora, who is the opening theme director Dan Da DanThe first season of the upcoming season and co-director. During our conversation, Gongora reflects on Pop culture influenced his creative process and his evolving roles to coach with long-time collaborator Fuga Yamashiro, and how their shared creative vision and occasional art disagreement can help Tag Team's Ups and downs Dan Da Dan Early work from season 2.

This interview has been edited as clear.

IO9: Season 1 ends with a suspense cliff, making fans crave more. Is this always planned from the beginning, or is the decision to develop in the production process meant to build expectations for the second season?

Abel Gongora: This was decided from the beginning – it was more like a script decision. They already have comics so they can see where they are going to cut, which was done early in the making.

IO9: This time, you’re in a co-director role, not just dealing with the opening of the show, with dark silhouettes and bold Kon Ichikawa-inspired typography. What led to the transition from an opening director to a co-director of season 2?

Gongara: After opening, I started to assist [Yamashiro] return. I was involved in the project and then I had to understand important things like the story of the characters. It went a little bit smoothly because I'm already in the season [one] a little. Production is really hard – there is a lot of work to do for a season. Production thought it would be nice to have two directors, so in the first season, the job wasn't difficult. I started with all the setup designs that started at the end of season one and then decided, so I'm a little slow to start [directing] In season 2.

IO9: Dan Da DanThe opening theme of the creepy Nuts became an instant fan favorite, and even won several anime awards. This sequence has a clear nod to popular culture iconography, e.g. Supermanblending bold style choices with the unique energy of the show. What inspired the direction of this creativity, and you have your personal favorite moments in the opening sequence?

Gongara: At that time, I had a conversation with the director of Season 1. [and] He gave me complete freedom because we worked together for a long time. He knows more or less my style. He just asked me to use Superman For reference – these silhouette pictures. He would say, “As long as you use it, it's OK. You can do whatever you want.” So I started watching Superman I started to find ideas on how to use it and I also added something extra to make another scene for the opening. We agree that we don't want to have the normal look of the show, so it looks more like shiny fancy colors – more special.

I showed the director all the ideas and concepts. He likes it. Then, I started the storyboard as I started reading this song. I thought this song was really cool, so it was really exciting to do a storyboard because you have to feel the rhythm and find ideas based on the rhythm of the song. Yamashiro is really open to everything. It's difficult, but it's fun.

My favorite part is the outline I made myself. Then one of the guys on the team did some rough animation cuts, which was a very amazing animator. I was very happy because I asked him if he could make it with paper and pencil. Pictures are like cereals on the screen. If you stop the frame, you have real particles of the paper, then real pencils. This is something we no longer do in the animation. A little like a lot of work, and I'm glad this animator did it. It turned out to be very beautiful. Also, I ended up doing the synthesis because I wanted to push this rough style. Yes, these parts are my favorite opening ceremony.

IO9: Season 2 opening is “On My Road”, to the end of Aina, follow a similar approach to using silhouettes like the first season, or are you looking forward to a brand new mesh like the Poppy Sound of Aina's song?

Gongara: This would be completely different. I can't say much, but it's going to be really different and I'm happy about it. I think this is great. I want something different because otherwise it looks like trying to remake something good, and I don't think it's fun. But yes, you'll see.

IO9: In Evil eyes During the interview with the director, you mentioned watching and drawing huge inspiration from horror movies and Hong Kong movies to help shape your approach Evil eyes arc. Which movies help you with nails Dan Da DanThe action treatment in the second season is horrifying atmosphere?

Gongara: Main reference Dan Da Dan meeting Supermancertainly. I really like the way Hideaki Anno does the new version Superman,,,,, Shin Ultraman. We also have kaiju and so on, so I really like it Shin Godzilla and Shin Kamen Rider. Kung Fu movies also have some commonalities. They sometimes share similar storytelling, one affects the other. For example, like the character face-to-face smash Zoom, something similar is often used in both media. We try to analyze these things.

I'm very grateful, too alien Movie. This is also suitable Dan Da DanThe science fiction part is very scary. I think the original alien It's a very amazing movie. I don't think there is really a movie that mixes all of this together, but we're trying to get ideas and general impact by watching a lot of movies. I think Yamashiro-San will do that too.

IO9: The first season is a huge visual scene, effortlessly shifting expressive animation between horror, action and romance, intensifying every moment. Are there any specific scenes in the comic that creatively drives the studio in Season 2? Animation allows the series to take things to another level moment, but it turns out to be a challenge to cross the finish line?

Gongara: ((laugh)We are in the middle [production] today. We are trying new things, such as sometimes mixing 3D to help animators. Sometimes we have ideas that traditional animation can’t do, or it can be crazy. We are trying to find out how to use 3D in a more creative way. There's a little Evil eyesalso. We are doing some experiments using 3D. We also have a lot of new music this season and we are trying to use it the way it is.

IO9: You have mentioned that you and Yamashiro have previously worked in a collaborative environment. How are your two styles created Dan Da Dan What is the second season? It turns out that this is a difficult feeling process, where you creatively disagree, or is it a seamless transition for the two of you?

Gongara: I think, of course [Yamashiro] There was a bigger involvement because he decided everything you could see in season one and I tried to follow his direction. Of course, we don't agree with everything. But half of our split this season. It's not like half and half stages. It's like I had the first arc and then he got the second arc and then I went back to the third arc and then he did something later. We share this way, but we are still involved in both. Sometimes he helped me add some storyboard parts or some ideas and I would contact him too [on] color. We need to make a decision because there may be some design in my plot and his plot. We have been working together.

We have this background and we have worked together on many projects together. [We’ve worked] We learned a lot from Masaki Yuuasa before. So we have a similar vision. We agree with many things, and we have similar views on animation and movies. We like to push perspective, we like to push the expression of the characters, perhaps more than other directors. This isn't too difficult for both. [of us]I hope. I can't speak for him, but I think it's generally going well.

Dan Da Dan Season 2 will premiere on Netflix, Crunchyroll and Hulu in July this year. Evil eyes A theater released in the United States on June 6.
