As new offensive unfolds, German Green Party's actions in Gaza lash out at Israel's actions
Germany's Green Party strongly criticized Israel's military operations in the Gaza Strip on Saturday after the country launched a major new offensive overnight on sealed territory.
Green Party leader Franziska Brantner said the continued blockade of aid delivery and new expansion of hostilities in the Gaza Strip is “unacceptable”.
She added that one in five people in Gaza are at risk of hunger, referring to the latest IPC food security assessment, which is supported by several UN organizations and aid organizations.
Brantner said the German government must “clear its position on complying with international humanitarian law.”
Meanwhile, populist politician Sahra Wagenknecht also demanded an immediate halt to deliver German weapons to Israel, describing its operations in the Gaza Strip as “destruction and enormous war crimes.”
Wagenknecht, who leads the Sahra Wagenknecht coalition, said the German government must immediately end its “solidarity policy” with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Observers fear that Israel's new offensive will lead to more deaths in the coastal zone, where people have lived in catastrophic situations for many months.
Israeli military has been delivering aid to Gaza for more than two months, accusing Palestinian Islamic group Hamas of reselling aid supplies to increasingly impoverished people.
Israel recently announced that it will allow the recovery of aid delivery, but not through existing channels.
Brantner demanded “unhindered access to humanitarian aid.” She accused German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul of supporting the restructuring of aid “rather than letting established humanitarian actors do their jobs”.
On a recent trip to Israel, Wadephul expressed his understanding of the Israeli argument that aid delivery should not serve Hamas and promise German support.
