“This stain is associated with urban growth, whether ordered or disordered, without universal sanitation throughout the region. In other words, sewage flows into rivers, lagoons and from lagoons into the sea.”

“Today, you can see the color greener. Why? Because it may have cyanobacteria, which algae will breed in very unhealthy conditions when you have a lot of sewage in the lagoon.”

The stain appeared on the Barra Da Tijuca beach in western Rio on May 14 (May 14).

Reuters drone lenses show the water is brown, which contrasts sharply with the blue of the ocean.

“Sewage flows into rivers, into lagoons, into the sea from lagoons, into the sea,” biologist Mario Moscatelli told Reuters.
