Alibaba announces Advanced Qwen 3 AI as China's technology competition strengthens
(Reuters) – Chinese tech giant Alibaba Group (BABA) launched the Qwen 3 on Tuesday, an upgraded version of its flagship artificial intelligence model, introducing new hybrid reasoning capabilities.
The launch was as competition in China’s AI sector grew, inspired by the success of breakthroughs by local startup DeepSeek earlier this year, which claims to have built a higher-performance model than its Western counterparts.

Last Friday, Baidu, a Chinese search leader, participated in the AI arms race last Friday, with its Ernie 4.5 turbo and the reasoning-focused Ernie X1 Turbo model.
Alibaba's latest version combines regular AI with advanced dynamic reasoning to create a platform that the company calls application and software developers more adaptable and efficient.
The e-commerce giant had previously snatched its Qwen 2.5-Max model in late January a few days after DeepSeek announced the news, claiming to perform well.
