Strong earthquake

Istanbul – Türkiye's Disaster and Emergency Management Agency said on Wednesday, Istanbul had an initial earthquake of 6.2. There were no reports of damage or harm, but many people poured out of buildings in Istanbul with fear, looking for information on their phones and calling loved ones.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the depth of the earthquake is about 6 miles. Its center is about 25 miles southwest of Istanbul, the Marmara Sea.

There were several aftershocks, including one with a size of 5.3. Disaster and emergency management agencies urge residents to stay away from buildings.

The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipal Government said no “serious cases” were reported after the earthquake, in a statement posted on its social media account.

Kemal Cebi, mayor of Kucukcekmece region in western Istanbul, told local broadcaster NTV that “no negative developments are yet”, but he reported that many buildings could be at risk due to the density of the region.

Türkiye was crossed by two major fault lines and earthquakes were frequent.
