Last year, New Jersey ranked third in the U.S. in anti-Semitic events

Anti-Semitism in the United States continues to rise, breaking national records in its fourth year, according to a report released by the Anti-Defamation League on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, hate incidents against Jews have soared on university campuses near New Jersey. Last year, Garden State reported a total of 719 anti-Semitic events, and despite this down 13% from the previous year, the state remains the third highest anti-Semitic activity in the country, behind only New York and California.

The audit found that all 21 anti-Semitic incidents occurred in New Jersey, with Bergen (162), Middlesex (93) and Essex (Essex) the highest number.

ADL Scott Richman of ADL New York/New Jersey Remistional said: “We are entering a shocking new normal in the anti-Semitic events in New Jersey and across the country.

Among the most shocking incidents in Garden State, there were 17 attacks and seven targeted Orthodox Jews, seven of which were linked to Israel. The audit says Bergen County has the highest number of attacks, with six reported attacks.

Other disturbing incidents include a Maywood man arrested on multiple charges after police said he used anti-Semitic slurs and pointed a pistol at a customer outside the Params supermarket, as well as a rapper from Hackensack who entered Jewish holidays and beat Jewish holidays.

Bergen County has led the second consecutive year, with the largest number of anti-Semitism incidents reported. Teaneck and Bergenfield, which have a large Orthodox population, account for only 56 incidents in 2024.

Last year, ADL also recorded 482 harassment incidents and 220 vandalism incidents.

The audit said that on university campuses, anti-Semitism reports increased, with 78 reports, a 53% increase from last year. Most of them happened on Rutgers on the New Brunswick campus. In spring 2024, Princeton and Rutgers had several camps, which led to the final being postponed and resettled.

The 9,354 anti-Semitic incidents recorded nationwide last year increased by 5% from the previous year, the highest number since anti-Semitic regulators began tracking events in 1979.

The audit calculated that there will be more than 25 “targeted anti-Semitism” every day in 2024, more than one hour per hour.

ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt said in a written statement that the report showed a “fearing level of anti-Semitism” and “a lasting and grim reality for the American Jewish community.”

The report said Hamas' attack on Israel was a Hamas attack, in which Hamas fighters killed 1,200 people and occupied 250 hostages, and anti-Semitism activities grew in the United States and around the world. The report said most anti-Semitism incidents reported last year – 5,452 were linked to Israel or Zionism. Many of these events occur at the assembly in the form of speeches, chantings, signs and slogans.

ADL notes that it lists only anti-Semitic activities targeting Jews, such as classic anti-Semitic traits, blood slander, signs equating Zionism with Nazism, celebrating Hamas attacks and support for Jewish terrorism.

“ADL is cautious not to confuse universal criticism of Israel or anti-idiopathy with anti-Semitism. Legal political protests, support for Palestinian rights or expressions of opposition to Israeli policies are not included in the audit.”

The report also found that attacks on 250 individuals increased by 21%.
