ABC project laborers win after election focus on cost of living, Trump

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's centre-left Labor party is expected to win the conservative opposition.

Broadcaster Sky News Australia and Seven predict that conservative liberals and national coalitions cannot win the government based on early counts, while ABC's election analyst Anthony Green said Labor won the victory.

The cost of living pressure and concerns over the turbulent policies of U.S. President Donald Trump has been one of the main issues in the minds of voters.

Albanese, who spoke after the vote, said Australians voted for “equalities, wishes and opportunities for all” and the courage to face adversity and kindness in those in need.

The poll showed labor in the poll after falling behind in February with Peter Dutton's conservative league in February.

Meanwhile, Dutton admitted to failure and lost his seat – echoing the fate of the Canadian Conservative Party and the fate of leader Pierre Poilievre, whose election was also attributed to Trump's opposition a few days ago.

“We were underperforming during this campaign, and it was obvious tonight, and I took full responsibility for it,” he said. “Earlier, I called the Prime Minister to congratulate him on his success tonight. It was a historic moment for Labor and we recognize that.”

Treasurer Jim Chalmers said the Labor government had “a variety of troubles” at the end of 2024, but rejoined the competition due to the strong Albany’s campaign performance, policies addressing concerns about the cost of living and the Trump effect.

“The economy becomes positive because of negatives – cutting interest rates is part of the story,” he told the ABC.

The central bank lowered the rates on the eve of February’s elections, inverting the course after 13 interest rates rose, which increased the repayment of household mortgages.

Chalmers said the “influence of American politics” also helped.

“Trump factor”

Opposition Liberal Party spokesman Senator James Paterson defended the sport, who also said it was negatively affected by the “Trump factor.”

“In Canada, this has had a devastating impact in Canada. … I think it's a factor, and one will be identified in a few hours,” he told the ABC.

The expected rebound in the fate of the center-left Labor Party reflects the fate of the Canadian Liberal Party, which won the week of Trump’s tariffs and comments on Canadian sovereignty this week.

Under the voting system of rankings in the country, preferences between Australian minor parties and supporters of independents may be crucial.

In the 2022 elections, primary votes are almost on average among Labor, Free Nationals and “others”. Analysts predict that one-third of voters will again choose Independence and minors in Saturday's election.
