Anaheim police kill driver in high-speed chase, crashing in Orange County

Anaheim police fatally shot a man Wednesday night after a high-speed chase ended when he hit a truck on a bridge over the Santa Ana River.

Shortly after the chase began, police officers committed a shooting at a motel in the 300 block of North Brookhurst Street, according to the Anaheim Police Sgt. Matt Sartre. The victim of the motel shooting was a man who was steadily taken to the hospital.

Sartre said the suspicious shooter drove away and the police chased him.

According to video captured by the KTLA News helicopter, he led the officers in a wild chase – blowing through the intersection, hitting other vehicles, weaving traffic and losing tires.

The station reported that the man raced in a white pickup truck along Highway 91 and then zoomed in to the ground street where police made several failed attempts to stop the truck.

After nearly an hour of chasing, the hunt was close to West Memory Lane and North Bristol Street, about eight miles from the shooting, Sartre said.

Police, located on a bridge over the Santa Ana River, performed a pit manipulation, strategically hitting the side of the suspect's truck and ferring it into the guardrail. According to Ketra, it bounced back on the road, hit a bridge partition and rested.

The officer hurriedly surrounded it as smoke gushed out of the vehicle. Sartre said police opened fire at 8:38 p.m. and the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

KTLA reported that a passenger in the car surrendered to police and was driven away by escort.

Information on the identity of the suspect and the victim of the shooting has not been immediately obtained.
