Cuban national arrested after trying to cross the Ontario bridge: Royal Canadian Mounted Police

A Cuban national was arrested in mid-March after trying to illegally enter Canada on the Fort Erie International Railway Bridge in the United States.

The RCMP said Thursday that authorities responded quickly and arrested the person under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.

The man was taken to the Canadian Border Services Agency at the port of entry to the Fort Erie Peace Bridge, where they were found not eligible to enter the country. They returned to the United States on the same day.

The arrest comes a time when Canadian authorities significantly raise border security measures, especially between official ports of entry, in response to an increasing focus raised by the Trump administration on drug trafficking and illegal immigration earlier this year.

Since then, Canada has made substantial investments in cross-border surveillance and law enforcement. These investments result in more arrests in irregular border crossings such as railway bridges and remote roads.

The RCMP said the area remains a hot spot for illegal border crossings. Recently intercepted several recent attempts at the railway bridge, and everyone eventually returned to the United States

Lepa Jankovic of the RCMP Border Integrity Division said efforts to maintain border security have been improved.

“RCMP continues to see the positive impact of new investments in law enforcement between the port of entry and between CN police, OPP and CBSA to maintain the security and integrity of the Canadian borders,” she said.
