  • Emma Roma Jayne struggles with weight until she undergoes bariatric surgery in 2022.

  • She lost 130 pounds in two years and found some unexpected changes other than weight loss.

  • These changes include her feet contracting, beginning to like avocado and losing friends.

Emma Roma Jayne stayed in the car on a family trip in 2022, when everyone else went to the beach. The idea of wearing shorts in public and having her such an unsafe body makes her feel uncomfortable inside.

Australia-based Tiktok creator and influencer partner manager Roma Jayne has been struggling with his weight. She tried to eat healthy, tried different diets and “stay exercise”, but she didn't lose weight.

After a beach trip, her mom told her enough.

“She's like, 'It's not right. You're 22. You should enjoy your life and go to the beach as long as you want and feel comfortable.' She suggested I should have bariatric surgery like she did.

So in 2023, Roma Jayne had a bariatric surgery and since then, she has had a completely different relationship with food and body.

“At first, I really liked, 'It's cheating. You need to put in hard work to lose weight.' But I see bariatric surgery as a way to stop food noise and then change my lifestyle because I don't want to still struggle with the same problem for the next 10 years.”

The year after the operation, she lost about 110 pounds. Since then, she has lost another 22 pounds this year and has lost weight, changing lifestyle changes. She now exercises six times a week and eats a high-protein, low-carb, balanced diet.

While bariatric surgery is becoming more common, weight loss is booming, according to a recent study, as more people are being prescribed drugs such as Ozempic and Mounjaro to lose weight.

Bariatric surgery “was the best decision I’ve ever made in my life,” said Roma Jayne. “It completely changed my life.”

Besides the obvious, Roma Jayne noticed seven unexpected changes after losing weight.

People are more friendly

“There is no jumping around the bushes, and when I'm big, I'll definitely treat them differently,” Roma Jayne said. “People just aren't that friendly, but they're kind to me right now.”

She said people held the doors for her, greeted her in the street, and now had a conversation with her, and she felt “invisible” before she lost weight.

Her feet have become smaller

“I didn't even know that this is one of the more random changes in my foot shrinking,” Roma Jayne said.

She has four pairs of shoes, all of which vary in size, and as she loses weight, her feet get smaller, and she buys these shoes.

Her feet are now slim, she has gone from an American No. 9 shoe to a 7.5 shoe.

A 2014 study published in the Turkish Journal of Surgery found that 80% of the 212 smaller participants each year after surgery received shoes for weight loss. The researchers believe this may be due to a decrease in fat on the feet and the arches get higher once they lose weight.

Her voice changed

Roma Jayne also said that since the surgery, her voice has become higher and clearer.

There are not many studies on the effects of weight loss on pronunciation. Some small, limited studies have shown that people’s voices may change slightly after bariatric surgery, but the differences are not obvious enough.

Her skin is clearer

Roma Jayne has struggled with acne before but found that her skin clears when it loses weight.

She said she took a low-carb diet and cut sugar. According to the American Dermatology Association, eating high-glycemic foods that quickly increase blood sugar, such as white bread, potato chips, pastries and white rice – is associated with acne.

Roma Jayne also has PCOS, where acne is a symptom. The UK's National Health Service said weight loss can improve symptoms of PCOS.

Her taste has changed

Roma Jayne used to hate avocados and now loves them. She also ate a lot of fruits, but now she eats much less fruit and more vegetables.

A systematic review of the research published in the 2023 Journal of Nutrition found that in 26 studies, weight gain and obesity seemed to change people’s perceptions of taste and increase their preference for sweetness. However, the authors say these results are not conclusive and require more research.

She lost some friendship

When Roma Jayne lost weight, she said she dealt with “friends' jealousy and resentment.”

“I realized they were my friends because I made them feel better about themselves,” she said. “But now that I’m on my own journey, improving myself and making healthy changes, all of a sudden, they had problems with it.”

She has more confidence

Roma Jayne said: “When I get older, I will definitely use my body to protect myself from other people who know who really is me.

“I’m the most confident version I’ve ever had and I continue to become more and more confident every day.”

She said that surrounding herself with the right people has also improved her confidence.
