Apple Watch may get built-in cameras to support AI capabilities

According to a report by Bloomberg on Sunday, Apple will add cameras to the Apple Watch over the next two years to enable artificial intelligence features such as Apple Intelligence.
According to Apple commentator Gurman, who has a reliable record, the company is currently considering adding cameras to its standard series of watches and Ultra models in 2027. The report is because smartphone makers such as Apple, Google and Samsung are increasingly paying attention to AI capabilities in their latest devices.
“The current idea is to put the camera in the display of the series version, just like the front lens on the iPhone,” Gurman wrote in a weekly newsletter. He wrote that the camera lenses on the Ultra will be positioned slightly differently, sitting on the side of the watch near the crown and buttons.
Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Apple Intelligence debuted in the October iOS 18.1 update, providing a visual search tool that can help you identify objects and locations around you and surface any relevant information.
Gurman reported in December that Apple is exploring the possibility of adding temperature sensors and other physiological measurements to AirPods. HE and Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also reported that Apple is adding infrared cameras to future Airpods by 2026.
IR cameras can be used in many ways. The report details their ability to use in air gesture detection, with devices like Apple Vision Pro to enhance spatial audio or detect environmental changes in software including the new Apple Smart.
