Displaced Gaza people are forced to hide next to landfills

As Israel's new offensive in northern Gaza in March, hundreds of Palestinians were displaced in March and found themselves in severe living conditions after being forced to camp next to a landfill in Gaza.

The video, captured by journalist Nedal Ahmed, said the video showed families from northern northern towns and Beit Hanoun, living in tents near huge trash and waste mounds, facing the threat of disease.

A few days ago, the IDF fled Beit Lahia and Beit Hanoun in large numbers after sending evacuation warnings to several areas and told residents to go to the shelter of Khan Yunis in western Gaza city.

Reuters reported in February that the issue of waste management has become systematic in the Gaza system as municipal health breaks down.

A UN report in October found that the waste management infrastructure was “paralyzed by ongoing war.” Two major landfills in Gaza were inaccessible, “causing the spread of temporary waste dumping sites and the accumulation of solid waste, including hazardous medical waste, in the streets and near IDP shelters and temporary camps.”

“These unregulated dumping sites, which contain nearly 500,000 tons of solid waste, are often contaminated by a range of hazardous substances, have been breeding grounds for disease vectors such as Asmosquitoes and Rats,” the UN said. “Image source: NEDAL AHMED via Storyful
