After Cuba, millions in the dark, another massive power outage

Cuba suffered a massive power outage Friday night, affecting Havana and the country's provinces that have put millions into darkness.

Cuba's Ministry of Energy and Mining said that at around 8:15 pm local time, a power outage occurred at the Dizzomero substation in the suburb of Havana, “incurring huge power generation losses in western Cuba, followed by the failure of the national power system.”

The department said on its account on X that it is “in the process of recovery.”

The streets of Havana are dark and empty, with only windows from hotels with generators.

People of distant populations, Guantanamo, Alemisa, Santiago de Cuba and Santa Clara reported that the glittering people experienced power outages.

Earlier, the National Agency for Regulating the industry, the Electric Power Alliance, said in a daily report that peak hours demand would be around 3,250 MW and the deficit would reach about 1,380 MW, meaning 42% of the national energy system would be shut down. This number is not the highest in memory recently.

Cuba suffered three general damage in its national energy system late last year, putting the island in darkness amid a severe economic crisis.

Cuba's power grid has been plagued by frequent power outages in recent months, with more than half of the countries cutting power during peak hours. The disruption is mainly caused by fuel shortages and aging infrastructure. In many parts of the island, electricity is essential for cooking and pumping water.
