Here's how you can change the default app for your iPhone in a few simple steps

From this menu, you can choose to change the default apps for different categories on your iPhone. Here are the categories you can change, as well as Apple's description:

  • Application Installation*: Choose an alternative app market instead of the app store as the default setting.
  • Browser Application: Select another application instead of the Safari application you want to use when opening a web link.
  • Call up: Select another app instead of the phone app or the FaceTime app to make the call.
  • Call filtering: Select the application to introduce the caller ID and block unwanted callers.
  • Contactless Application*: Select another application to use the device's built-in technology for contactless transactions.
  • e-mail: Select another app instead of opening a link to send emails.
  • keyboard: Select the application for the range text input function.
  • Message delivery: Select another application instead of the message application you want to use when opening the link to send instant messages.
  • navigation*: Select another app instead of the Apple Maps app you want to use when opening a link for a location.

Click on any of these categories and you can change the default application. If you don't have a third-party app downloaded to your iPhone for a certain category, that category will show you Apple's app or nothing.

Can't I change my default application?

In some cases, yes. When Apple released iOS 14 in 2020, the update lets you change the default email and browser app for your iPhone. You can also change other categories before iOS 18.2 (such as keyboard), but these options are scattered throughout the settings.

With iOS 18.2, your iPhone gathers these categories in one place, and the update adds some other categories like messaging and calling.
