Secret Service shoots armed personnel near the White House

The Secret Service had an “armed confrontation” with law enforcement officers, firing shots near the White House earlier Sunday, the agency said in a statement.

Trump was not in the White House at the time. He spent a weekend at the Mar-A-Lago club in Florida.

Earlier Saturday, local police shared information with the Secret Service about a possible suicide from Indiana to Washington. At about midnight, Secret Service members met the person's vehicle parked near 17th and F Streets, about a block from the White House. The agency said a person was outside the car.

The agency said when officers approached, they saw the man with a gun and then a confrontation followed, during which the Secret Service shot and killed the man.

The Secret Service said he was taken to the hospital and his condition is not yet known. No harm was caused to anyone with the Secret Service.

The Metropolitan Police Department in Washington is investigating the shooting.
