Man told not to jump into the swimming pool before he dies

Michael Parker, 43, [Family Handout]

An investigation heard a Surrey man died after a caregiver jumped into the pool and “landed on him” and was told not to jump into the pool in person.

Michael Parker, who has Down syndrome, died on holiday in Spain on June 12, 2023, and Harry Beckwith is said to have landed on him while jumping into the hotel pool.

A survey heard a senior paramedic told Mr. Parker, 43, not to jump into Salou's swimming pool while on vacation in Bookham, Surrey.

Support worker Joanna Henderson told Surrey Coroner court that she told Mr. Bakerways “extra vigilance.”

Ms Henderson provided evidence Tuesday that she asked Mr Parker not to jump into the pool on June 10.

The resort group is a good swimmer and meets regularly in the farm’s own pool, she said.

Swimmers are not allowed to jump into the farm pool, Ms Henderson told the court that she hopes the rules apply to her clients and employees.

Asked if she thought Mr. Beckvis would understand that such a rule would be in place, she said: “Yes, because he was doing the work there. He wasn't there to enjoy himself, he was there to support these guys.”

The investigation learned that when the party arrived at the hotel, a dynamic risk assessment was conducted around the swimming pool.

Earlier, the investigation had heard that when both jumped into the pool, Mr. Bakerways “landed on Mr. Parker, who “immersed in the bottom.”

The investigation continues.
