New Austrian Union confirms pro-EU position

The newly formed Austrian alliance has made commitments to the EU and supports Ukraine.

“Austrian action will continue to be characterized by cooperation and solidarity within the EU,” said the plan proposed by the conservative Austrian People's Party (ÖVP), the Central Social Democratic Party (Spö) and the liberal NEOS on Thursday.

The new alliance also supports EU courses in Ukraine and plans to appoint Ukrainian coordinators, the plan said.

However, the tripartite coalition stressed that Austria's neutrality will not be shaken. Austria is not a member of NATO and its support for Ukraine is limited to humanitarian aid.

News of the alliance ended the longest-ever government-founded period in Austria after the far-right Liberal Party (FPö) won the September parliamentary election.

The coalition talks between ÖVP and FPö (seemed as Eurosceptic and Moscow-friendly) went bankrupt earlier this month, partly because the parties were unable to reach a consensus on the foreign policy line.

NEOS leaders beat Meinl-Reisinger is expected to be appointed Foreign Secretary for the new coalition, although the list of ministers will only be published in the coming days.
