Hollywood star Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa died at their home in Santa Fe with their dog.

The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office said the cause of death is under investigation, but they believe the foul is currently a factor.

The 95-year-old won two Oscars and two BAFTAs in his acting career, which spanned decades, including the Best Actor Award in 1972 for his role as Jimmy “Popeye” Doyle in French Connections.

Hackman is also known for his roles in Bonnie and Clyde and Superman's villain Lex Luthor.

He won a further Academy Award in the Best Supporting Actor category in the 1992 Western Non-Original Actor Award, directed by Clint Eastwood.

Hackman hasn't appeared in a movie since 2004, when he played Monroe “Eagle” Cole in “Political Sarcasm” and welcomed to Mooseport.

The American actor married Betsy, 63, in 1991.

A statement from the Santa Fe County sheriff in New Mexico said the death was “actively investigated.”

“We can confirm that Gene Hackman and his wife were found at their residence on the Sunset Trail Wednesday afternoon,” the police department said.

“It’s a positive investigation – but at the moment we don’t think fouls are a factor.”
