Driver kills e-bike rider by slamming him into a life-threatening concrete post office

A car driver was chased and deliberately hit an electronic bicycle rider, killing him on the side of the road and sentenced to life in prison for murder.

Birminghamcrown Court told him that Abdirahman Ibrahim, 21, saw the seats of friends Liam Jones and Tayzhon Johnson on an electric off-road bike in the Yardley area on August 1, 2023.

Ibrahim remained ruthless in the dock as he was sentenced to at least 22 years on Monday.

Judge Andrew Smith KC said Mr Jones was described in court as an interesting and bubbled “spark” for his family, and he did not prompt Ibrahim to chase him.

The 22-year-old was declared dead at the scene after being hit twice by a seat into a concrete column in Moat Lane.

The judge told Ibrahim of Bonham Grove of Yardley: “After careful reflection, I concluded that you did bring the car into the moat and moat lane so that you can use the car with a weapon.

“When you entered Coventry Road, you realized Liam Jones and Tayzhon Johnson and then changed the guidance.

“It used to be behind the electric bikes that Mr. Jones and Mr. Johnson drove, and you certainly didn’t wear a helmet.

“There is no evidence that Mr. Jones or Mr. Johnson has ever raced with your car or encouraged you to interact with them.”

The judge said the two realized they were being followed and drove along a one-way street to get away from the car, but Ibrahim quickly drove along another nearby road to catch them.

“After this intentional collision, your actions are subject to a selfish desire to escape the scene, and do not involve Mr. Jones' care,” the judge added.

Ibrahim’s brother, Abdullahi Ibrahim, also Bonham Grove, pleaded guilty to assist the criminal and was sentenced to two months and 10 months in prison.

The court heard the 22-year-old, a backseat passenger in the seat, was involved in an effort to hide the vehicle within hours of the murder.
