The turnout for the German general election to the afternoon was 52%
Voters turnout for Sunday's German election was 52%, according to federal return officials.
The turnout figure does not include postal voters. Polls are open until 6 p.m. (1700 GMT) and will be released after that polls and some preliminary results.
The statement did not compare the turnout figures to the last national parliamentary election in Germany in 2021, but the turnout figures in the afternoon were 36.5%.
This difference may be due to the high number of postal voting due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Turnout varies between Germany’s 16 federal states, although there are significant increases in election officials reported in many places compared to the last federal election three years ago.
The last turnout in 2021 was 76.4%. This year, more than 59 million German citizens are eligible for votes.
