A Pennsylvania policeman was killed during a shooting Saturday at a hospital in York County, Pennsylvania. The gunman (taking hospital staff hostage and restrained with zipper tie) was killed by police, police and police. Authorities said.
The borough said on Facebook that officer Andrew Duarte, who served in the West Borough Police Department, said on Facebook that the UPMC Memorial conference call.
“Our hearts are sad by the loss of innocent lives,” the statement said, adding that the Western Borough Police Department “lost comrades and friends.”
Officer Duarte was one of three police officers attacked by the gunman, and later officials were later identified as 49-year-old Diogenes Archangel-Artiz-Ortiz. The other two officers were in stable condition.
Officials said three hospital staff — a doctor, a nurse and a custodian — were injured and in stable condition. Another staff member was injured in the fall. No patients were injured.
York County District Attorney Tim Barker said in an afternoon press conference that Archangel-Ortis targeted the intensive care unit of the hospital in West Manchester, Pennsylvania. His motive is not yet known.
Mr. Buck added that the Gunners recently contacted the hospital department for “another person's medical purpose” but refused to provide more details. He also declined to provide other background information about Mr. Archangel.
At about 10:35 a.m., the gunman entered the hospital with a pistol and a zipper tie and quickly took several staff members as hostages. Susan Manko, the hospital's vice president of public relations, said in a statement that the gunman opened fire at about 11 a.m.
Archangel – Mr. Otitz was a staff member at the gun, and he restrained a staff member's hands with a zipper tie as police officers were preparing to violate the ICU. The officer tried to talk to the gunman.
Mr. Buck said police opened fire and killed him as he walked into the corridor and threatened the hostage.
Those injured were evaluated at Wellspan York Hospital in York, Pennsylvania, less than five miles from the UPMC Memorial, according to a WellSpan spokesman.
In an afternoon press conference, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro said he had contacted the White House with regard to the shooting and thanked the Trump administration for its attention, but said the state does not need federal Government help.
“Today in York County, we saw the best and worst human beings,” Mr. Shapiro said.
He added: “We pray for the recovery of this community and we pray for the family of officer Duarte.”
