French knife attack kills 1 person, injured at least 2 people for terrorism – State

Authorities say a knife attack in eastern France killed one person and at least two injured people were violently labeled Islamic extremism by President Emmanuel Macron.

A 37-year-old Algerian man was arrested, prosecutors said. The attack took place near the French city of Mulhouse, near the covered canal side market. The region borders Germany and Switzerland.

The French counterterrorism prosecutor's office said it is handling the investigation. Macron said the perpetrator was Islamic extremists, adding that the government was “fully determined” to respond to the attack.

France has always been highly alert to the threat of extremism. Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau is heading to the scene of the attack on Saturday night.

The Counter-Terrorism Prosecutor's Office said the victim was a 69-year-old Portuguese. The injured are the police officers who intervene.
